1. Make a donation

2017 - 2020
The Great Silence project is proud to be working with and supporting the following two charities:

Royal College of Organists
The Royal College of Organists’ vision is for a world in which organ and choral music are valued widely as being central to cultural and spiritual life. We represent and support organists and choral directors; promote the arts of organ playing and choral directing through learning and accreditation programmes; and encourage engagement with the organ, a fascinating musical instrument with a rich heritage and versatile future.

Friends of Cathedral Music
Friends of Cathedral Music aims to secure the future of cathedral music by encouraging the highest possible standards of choral and organ music, raising and awarding funds for choirs in need, and increasing public awareness and appreciation of this priceless living heritage.

Please learn more about these organisations and support their fine work by making a donation on their websites. Please add the reference 'TGS'. When you take part you will join our growing list of supporters.

2016
The Great Silence was generously supported by units of the British Armed Forces, Livery Companies of the City of London and corporate donors. We were able to make a significant contribution to
London Music Masters in 2016. The charity supports young musicians by providing tuition, workshops and mentoring in primary schools. This year, the charity will be devising a series of education projects inspired by The Great Silence, exploring themes relating to the anthem, the poem 'Song and Pain' and the First World War. A free education pack, devised by London Music Masters, will be available to download from this website for you to use with your school or choir soon. The Executive Director of London Music Masters, Rob Adediran, has said, 'London Music Masters works in inner-city primary schools providing high quality music tuition to children who might otherwise be denied access. We have been inspired by the vision of this ambitious project and are proud and excited to be participating in it!'

2. perform the anthem

One of the best ways of taking part in The Great Silence is to perform the anthem with your church, school or college choir.

As well as enjoying the opportunity to sing a highly acclaimed new piece of music, you will be participating in a nationwide project, which is associated with some of the most prestigious musical organisations in the UK.

The anthem is written for S.A.T.B + Organ/Piano and is suitable for both amateur and professional choirs.

To purchase your copy of the musical score, please visit the website of the composer, Samuel Bordoli, here. The composer has kindly agreed to make an annual personal donation to the project's selected musical charities from royalties generated from sales of the anthem.

If you are planning a performance of the anthem, please click here to contact the project coordinator so that we can include it on the Performances page.

3. send us your research

We are building a collection of stories, photographs and information about choristers and organists who fell in the First World War and memorials to them. We can only do this with the help of churches, schools, colleges and communities around the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth. We hope this collection will continue to grow beyond 11th November 2020, the centenary of the burial of ‘The Unknown Warrior’ in Westminster Abbey.

Click on Commemoration to see the growing collection of stories and photographs, and to add:
  • personal details, photographs, gallantry awards or a story about a chorister or organist
  • the location, details and photographs of a war memorial dedicated to choristers
